Description:

This course is aimed at anyone who would like to know more about European painting between 1890 – 1920. It will be a basic introduction to selected art movements during this period starting with the Art Nouveau Movement, how it was translated in a variety of European countries, focusing upon painting, architecture and the applied arts. We will look at some smaller movements in between, such as the dramatic painting style known as Fauvism, the movement that established Matisse, and conclude with Cubism and Orphism.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Interpret a work of art.
  • discuss artworks with others
  • Understand a little more about what Art History involves
  • Meet like-minded people

Lisa FretwellMy name is Lisa E Fretwell. I have been teaching art, glass and textile techniques for over 20 years. In the past, I have exhibited my work in New York, had a touring exhibition around the UK, and exhibited Gallery and non-Gallery venues in Hertfordshire, Leicester, London and Northamptonshire. Recently, I have been involved in the publishing of a new book called ‘Antarctic Atlas,’ which includes my hand drawn illustrations. I am currently making hand drawn illustrated cards to create funding for a Hedgehog charity called Hoggywobbles in Cambridgeshire. Since 2012 I have been teaching Art History in Cambridge. I will be exhibiting in London in April 2023..
