Brief Description:
Create a simple garment in stretch fabric and learn the correct techniques to construct it that will work for the material. You’ll learn which needles to use, which stitches to use and how to use a twin needle for a professional finish.
Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
Some dressmaking experience is essential.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
Have a stretch fabric garment created by yourself and the knowledge to try out more patterns in stretch fabric.
Extra costs on the course for example TEXTBOOK, materials or equipment:
A sewing pattern, ballpoint needle and twin needle. Fabric and matching thread for your project. (Before the workshop your tutor will send out a list of suitable patterns to help you choose, and details of the types of needles you will need, and advice on choosing the right type of stretch fabric.)
For the first session you will need to bring:
Sewing machine and cable and all your usual sewing equipment. Your sewing project.
The college does have sewing machines available to use if you prefer not to bring your own.
On completion of this course, what might your next steps be?
Enrol onto a dressmaking course or pattern drafting course.
Adult Learn and Train offer courses through-out the year.
Try similar courses or look at learning something completely new.
You will find provision on some Saturday and Sundays, you will also find courses available in the day and evening at different venues in Cambridge. Courses vary in length from one-off sessions to 10 weeks or more.

Linda CouchLinda Couch works as a theatrical and re-enactment costume maker and bridal seamstress for over twenty years. Additionally, she has her own successful costume label Milly Maybe. She also teaches dressmaking and creative sewing workshops for all levels for both adults and children.
