Brief Description:
This pottery course introduces you to a variety of techniques and new subjects in contemporary ceramics in a well-equipped classroom.
Suitable for beginners and more experienced students, each class consists of a short demonstration, detailed printed course notes (that include lots of illustrations and inspiration) and simple exercises through which you will be encouraged to build up your own interests and style. Projects will include hand-building functional items such as decorative platters and vases, experimenting with modelling techniques and you will also have the opportunity to try throwing on a potter’s wheel.
We offer a good range of coloured slips and glazes making it possible to include plenty of different glazing and decoration techniques.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Suitable for both beginners and more experienced students.

Learning Outcomes

  • Acquire the technical skills to make objects from clay;
  • Gain an understanding of ceramic processes;
  • Learn about, and put to use, the materials that are offered in the workshop;
  • Experiment with glazes, slips and underglazes;
  • Research and develop an interest in contemporary ceramics;
  • Record and evaluate results.

Extra costs on the course:

All of the basic tools and materials, including clay and glazes, are provided as part of the course fee but as the course progresses you may find that there are certain specialist tools, glazes or materials that you may wish to purchase for your personal use. In addition,participants will be encouraged to purchase their own underglaze colours (these are similar to the paints you might buy for a painting class and are around the same cost) further information and general help and advice on where to purchase these items will be available at the appropriate times from your course tutor.

For the first session you will need to bring:

  • Clean Overall/apron;
  • Notebook/sketchbook;
  • Clean towel for hand washing;
  • A Pencil or pen;

Debora CaneDebora is an enthusiastic art tutor with nearly 40 years’ experience. Following a brief pottery apprenticeship with Chris Soulein the 1980s, she studied ceramics at Medway College of Design andset up her own ceramics studio,which she ran in Cambridge for many years. In recent years she has expanded her interests as an artist to include digital art and pen & ink.
