Brief Description

In this stimulating, two day silver jewellery course you will learn to make your own jewellery working with oval, teardrop, marquise and facetted gemstones in 925 sterling silver and fine silver. You will be offered a choice of stones to work with and will learn or improve your skills making bezel/tube settings with stylish surrounds. You will also learn how to set and secure a semi-precious gemstone.

This course aims to make you feel safe and confident in the workshop and have a good understanding of how to safely use the various pieces of equipment.

.Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Manual dexterity is needed. Previous experience is helpful, though complete beginners are welcome.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To combine theoretical understanding, sequenced practical activities to develop skills in making jewellery in sterling and fine silver.
  • Including the basic techniques of cutting, filing, soldering and polishing, hammering, making bails for pendants and using drills and burrs powered by a pendant motor.
  • Experiment with methods for adding texture and different finishing techniques
  • Recognise and handle silversmithing tools safely.
  • Develop skills in forming, annealing and pickling metal.
  • Prepare silver prior to soldering or polishing

Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment:

Silver costs have been covered in the cost of the course, maximum £20. The tutor will bring a selection of stones for which the material fee should cover, you may like to bring a small amount of cash just in case you have expensive taste! . Feel free to bring your own but please be aware that they may not be suitable for use within the projects being covered during the weekend.

For the first session you will need to bring:

Tools will be provided but if you have your own tools please feel free to bring them… Make sure they are marked for you to identify them.

PLEASE NOTE: for Health and Safety reasons you must not wear open-toe shoes/sandals, and any long hair must be tied back as it is a workshop environment.
Please bring a packed lunch on both days.
