Brief Description:

In this stimulating, one day silver jewellery course you will experiment and learn how make jewellery starting in copper and then 925 sterling silver, using processes that exploit each metal’s outstanding physical, chemical, and aesthetic properties. Through a set of teacher-led projects, you will experiment and gain understanding of how to manipulate and texturise silver to create beautiful and unique forms, using a variety of processes, such as fold forming, rolling, forging, hammering, etching and anticlastic raising. This course aims to make you feel safe and confident in the workshop and have a good understanding of how to safely use the various pieces of equipment.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Manual dexterity is needed. Previous experience is helpful, though complete beginners are welcome.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

  • To combine theoretical understanding, sequenced practical activities to develop skills in making a series of jewellery in copper and sterling silver.
  • Experiment with methods for adding texture and different finishing techniques
  • Including the basic techniques of cutting, filing, soldering and polishing, fold forming, rolling, forging, hammering, etching and anticlastic raising.
  • Recognise and handle silversmithing tools safely.
  • Develop skills in forming, annealing and pickling metal.
  • Prepare silver prior to soldering or polishing

Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment:

There is a fee included for your metal for the day. There may be an opportunity to purchase stones/extra silver so feel free to bring some cash with you.

For the first session you will need to bring:

Please bring a pen, pencil and notebook. Tools will be provided but feel free to bring your own. You may wish to bring an apron.

She is a passionate teacher of Design and Technology with over 18 years teaching experience. She has a masters of education focusing on creative idea generation and development and has a particular interest in biomimicry; using and replicating nature through product design to make unique textures and forms . She teaches marking out, piercing, finishing techniques, hammering, gemstone setting, adding texture to metals, rolling, forging, fold forming, and much more.
