Make some stunning jewellery by releasing your creative impulse and learn more about this incredibly fulfilling craft.
Use the skills you’ve learned to impress friends and family with gifts or start your own business. You will develop your silver jewellery and stone setting skills, building on previous learning.
Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
Some previous knowledge is essential. This could be from other jewellery classes that included soldering techniques and maybe stone setting, metal forming and patination, casting and patterning/surface texturing. Learners who have completed a previous beginners course this year with the tutor are welcome to join this course.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
• Handle and recognise specialist silversmithing tools, and be able to use them safely.
• Use a variety of tools and techniques to create silver jewellery projects.
• Improve their skills with metal forming and a variety of stone setting techniques.
• Observe different techniques in practice including patination and balling, some different home silver casting methods and basic stone shaping.
• Understand about precious metals and the law, hallmarking, precious metal alloys.
• Prepare precious metals and stones use improved techniques and complete own projects using skills learned.
Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment
The tutor will advise regarding purchasing silver for the course. You are free to purchase stones and silver yourself for the guided projects but please keep to the size & shape suggested by your tutor.
For the first session you will need to bring:
Bring a Pen – tools will be provided but feel free to bring your own.
PLEASE NOTE: for Health and Safety reasons you must not wear open-toe shoes/sandals, and all long hair ties back as it is a workshop environment.
There are no materials fee included in the cost of the course – The tutor will advise you where to order from – costs will be about £25 per term depending on what you make.

Since leaving the School of Jewellery in 1996 I have had my own shop, have sent my jewellery all around the world, and even had my jewellery at the NEC Clothes Show. I have taught adults with Learn and Train at various community colleges for over 10 years. Courses have included Beginners, Intermediate and City & Guilds silver smithing and jewellery making courses.
