Course details

Brief Description:

Spanish course suitable for those willing to improve their fluency in the language at a higher-intermediate level for work, study or leisure. You will be working towards reaching level B2 of the Council of Europe Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The course follows a communicative-interactive approach and action- oriented learning. Teaching and learning is carried out entirely in Spanish. All students’ needs and goals will be taken into account to make the learning experience appealing and meaningful. Students will be able to build on their previous knowledge to further develop all four language skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening), although particular emphasis will be given to speaking and listening. Regular homework will be set to consolidate what has been learnt in class. Continuous assessment will be carried out to measure students’ progress.
The course is priced for 10 weeks (one term); To complete the full course and cover all the learning outcomes listed below you will need to attend both terms (there is no obligation to attend more than one term).

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

This course is suitable for those who have already studied Spanish for 4 years (approx. 240 hours.) If you are unsure of your level, please contact the office and we will put you in contact with the tutor.
This is the second term, you should have approx. 20 hours experience covering the following:
Term I
1. The media
Tell and comment on a piece of news;
Identify, differentiate and use Past tenses;
Use of passive voice and impersonal constructions;
Recognise and use informative verbs.
2. Sustainable tourism
Debate and argue about different views and options;
Use Present Indicative or Subjunctive when giving an opinion or assessing different options;
Use Present Indicative when formulating conditions (solo si/siempre que…);
Give reasons in support of an idea or action.
3. Make a short presentation on a subject agreed with your tutor;
4. Debate on a subject presented by other learners.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

Term 2
1. Sports, Traditions and Cultural heritage
Give advice;
Express fear;
Express unreal conditionals – Si + Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo + Conditional;
State Knowledge or lack of it (Pretérito Imperfecto SABER/PENSAR/ CREER).

2. Lifestyles
Express cause and purpose;
Use some Prepositional Verbs (Darse cuenta de/Ser consciente de/Arrepentirse de/Disfrutar de/Dar vueltas a/Renunciar/Pertenecer a/Pensar en);
Formulate hypothesis dependent on unreal / unlikely conditions – Second conditional – Si + Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo + Conditional;
Use relative clauses in present/past tenses.
3. Make a short presentation on a subject agreed with your tutor;
4. Debate on a subject presented by other learners.

Term 3
1. Travelling around Latin America and Spain
Describe towns, cities and their features;
Identify and construct relative clauses with the participle.

2. Education and society
Identify and list vocabulary for educational and social issues;
Establish conditions and requirements referred to actions or events in the past (Perfect Infinitive infinitivo compuesto-/Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo;
Construct impersonal sentences (Se valorará…) and the pasive voice in the future;
Construct relative sentences with relative pronouns (quienes, aquellos que, todo aquel que, el/la/los/las que).

3. Make a short presentation on a subject agreed with your tutor;
4. Debate on a subject presented by other learners.

I hold a Degree in Spanish Law from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) and a Language Teaching Qualification (Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults) awarded by International House Barcelona and the University of Barcelona (Spain) Institute for Lifelong Learning (IL3). I also hold an MA in Legal Translation and Interpreting (English-Spanish). I am a professional translator and teach adult Spanish courses at various Colleges in Cambridgeshire.
