Ever dreamt of effortlessly counting from zero to a billion? Now’s your chance! Join us in this lively class where learning becomes an adventure, and together we’ll master the art of counting in Chinese.

As we dive into the joyous Chinese New Year, we’ll be celebrating the Year of the Dragon by unravelling the mythical narratives of the 12 zodiac animals. You will find out what animal are you and what’s your best match! Be captivated by tales that transcend time and culture and take home a Chinese New Year decoration with your own writing of calligraphy.

Embrace the thrill of discovery, share laughs, and delve into the magic of Chinese characters in this four-hour session that promises to be both educational and downright fun. Reserve your spot now and let the learning festivities begin!

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

No prior experience in Chinese is required for this course. It is designed for individuals who are simply interested in getting to know about Chinese Characters and some culture background from the very beginning.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Recognise how a Chinese character is structured and its basic strokes
  • Understand how to decompose characters
  • Guess the meaning of a character by its radical
  • Learn numbers from one to ten and understand the counting rules
  • Master 24 most frequently used characters (or maybe more)

Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment:

The tutor will supply some calligraphy brushes and a special type of paper to make the ‘Fu’ character, a typical Chinese New Year decoration as a takeaway souvenir after the course.

For the first session you will need to bring:

A Pen and a notebook if you want to have a try writing characters as well as making some notes. Optionally, you may also bring a smartphone or tablet if you’d like to explore some Chinese learning apps recommended by the teacher.

Liming Guan (Ming)Liming Guan (Ming) is an educator who once served as a teacher librarian in an IB school in China, has completed studies in applied linguistics in the UK. Ming has deep interested in both Chinese and English cultures, particularly in language and children’s literature. Her background in promoting reading in libraries, combined with a focus on second language acquisition, has equipped her to teach Chinese during her free time. Passionate about instructing both children and adults in Chinese, Ming employs innovative methods to make her lessons engaging. She introduces picture book teaching for a vivid language understanding to beginners and explore oracle bone inscriptions to aid in comprehending Chinese characters. These approaches aim to deepen students’ understanding and maintain fun in learning.
