This course is aimed at anyone who would like to know more about European painting between 1945 –1995. It will be a basic introduction to selected art movements during this period starting with the influences upon the Abstract Expressionist Movement, how it affected European countries, focusing essentially upon painting, sculpture and installations. We will look at contemporary artist’s such as Tracy Emin, Mark Rothko, Carl Andre and Banksy, and conclude with the controversial work of the Sensationalists, including Damien Hirst, Ron Mueck and Sam Taylor-Wood. Artists and their work will be studied each week so that students can gain an insight into how the periods linked together, and why they were seen to be so important during this fast developing era.
You will learn through a series of power point presentations, worksheets and class discussions.
You will need a notepad and pen. No other costs involved.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a free trip to the Murray Edwards College in Cambridge on Wed 24 April. 10am- 12 noon. Please meet at the entrance to the College for the first class.

After a brief overview of the history of calligraphy, participants will focus on a beautiful eighth-century script, known as Uncial, trying out some of the letters with a broad-edged nib and ink. By the end of the session everyone will have had the opportunity to try writing out a name or a short quotation, perhaps adding a little colour as well.
This session is designed for complete beginners to calligraphy. Those who already have a little experience will also enjoy the session.
For participants to find out a little about what calligraphy is, perhaps with the view to joining a weekly class in a future term.
· Gain an insight into the historical origins of today’s calligraphy
· Gain some experience of handling and using broad-edged nibs and ink
· Use a broad-edged nib to write some letters of the Uncial alphabet
· Write out a name or a favourite quotation to take home
· Add some colour if wished, and if time allows
Broad-edged nibs, ink, and paper will be for sale on the day. Please bring some cash to purchase these from the tutor, as she is unable to take card payments. You are likely to spend approx £5.00 depending on what you wish to purchase.
You will need to bring the following: pencil, ruler, protractor, eraser, old jam jar (to use as a water pot), old/cheap small brush for loading the pen with ink, and
an old cloth or tea towel for protecting the table. You may wish to bring coloured pencils for adding some decoration but these are entirely optional.
Calligraphy is done on a sloping board. There will be a few to borrow, but if you happen to have your own rigid portable board, for example a piece of MDF, please do bring it (suggested size at least A3, if possible a little larger). You could use the board in your lap resting against the edge of the table, or alternatively please bring two fat rolls of kitchen towel to prop the board up on the table, and a couple of blobs of blu-tack to prevent it sliding.
If you have enjoyed the taster session, you may like to join a weekly class (from September). Calligraphy is a hugely broad subject and there is always something new to learn. Over time, you would have the opportunity to learn different scripts and, if wished, work towards CLAS (Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society) Certificates. The classes will also offer a chance to consider layout and design, and to use calligraphy for creative projects.
Adult Learn and Train offer courses through-out the year.
Try similar courses or maybe look at learning something completely new.
You will find provision on some Saturday and Sundays, you will also find courses available in the day and evening at different venues in Cambridge. Courses vary in length from one-off sessions to 10 weeks or more.

Creative Writing for Improvers is an 8-week course focusing on deepening and broadening the skills required for successful storytelling. Whether you are crafting fiction for personal pleasure and achievement or with the desire to share your work with others, the more you can write with confidence and authority the more engaging your story will be. Creative Writing for Improvers will give you the opportunity to try different techniques and approaches to hone your writing style or maybe try a different method of storytelling. The current pandemic has caused many of us to seek out purposeful activities that feed the soul and promote good mental health by providing a focus for concentrated thought. Engaging in writing is to discover the long-lasting well-being benefits that come from harnessing creative energy to work on something that is both stimulating and results in a sense of satisfaction of a job done to the best of your ability.
Creative Writing for Improvers will give you the opportunity to experiment with new skills or techniques by working on a writing project under the guidance of an experienced writing tutor and published novelist. You may want to start a new short story or novel or perhaps revive a work that has languished in the bottom drawer for far too long, either way this course will help make the resulting storytelling the best it can possibly be. Crafting fiction is not concerned with striving for unobtainable perfection but is about practising the skills required whilst developing an understanding of how you can shape your story into the vision of your imagination.
As the ethos of Creative Writing for Improvers is to use active storytelling as a vehicle for learning it is necessary for participants to embark upon or resume a piece of fiction and to be prepared to progress the writing project between classes. Some prior experience in writing fiction / storytelling is required as a bedrock to build on but as plenty of opportunity will be given to recap the skills and craft of creative writing it doesn’t matter how rusty that experience has become. For every writer the foundations of a successful story well told have always been a pinch of inspiration, a bucketful of enthusiasm to learn, and barrowloads of motivation. So bring those along with you and unlock your storytelling potential.
Some prior experience in writing fiction / storytelling is required as a foundation to build on.
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

On this day school get a brief introduction into the world of Criminology. This course is designed for beginners and those with some previous experience of the subject.
You will discover what Criminology is and what it means in 2024.
Crime is a major issue in society, it makes some people afraid, for others it is a way of life but for the majority of the public there is an interest which has given birth to a whole industry in fiction and non-fiction storytelling via films, books and magazines. Crime ranges from the non-violent and trivial to serious and violent (including murder).
This course looks at various topics including; the definition of crime, the causes of crime, types of crime, who is a criminal, reporting crime and why it is important, who are the victims of crime, a brief overview of the criminal justice system and why are we so fascinated and appalled by crime.
No previous experience or knowledge is required, but a keen interest in criminology or other social sciences would be an advantage.
By the end of the course you will have:
There is no requirement for a course book as one will be provided, it is also recommended that you bring along a pen and paper for note taking if you wish to do so.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Do you need to update your CV? Did you not achieve your English qualification through school? Are you 19 years old or over?
This is a one year course that will enable you to take the GCSE exam in May/June 2024 (Dates TBC by exam board).
The exams consist of two papers, Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing and Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives. Both are worth 50%. There is also a non-examination assessment in spoken language.
It is also necessary to give a presentation or speech.
The funding is given to enable you to gain a grade 4 or above, within one academic year (equivalent to the old C grade). There is no tier for English GCSE so all grades are available.
This course starts in September 2023. Day and Time: Thursday 6.00 – 8.30 pm. Venue: Coleridge Community College.
Each week regular homework will be given which is directly linked to the class session and completion of this will enable you to make sense of the class work and for you to prepare for the exams. Good organisation will help you to get the most from the course. You will need to keep notes, be able to proofread and check writing tasks for errors and to speak in front of others in an assessed environment. Classes are informal and work very much on a communal basis where all are invited to share their viewpoints and ideas.
This is a challenging exam, and you must already be proficient at correctly using punctuation, grammar and spellings.
The course runs the whole year. Weekday sessions are 2.5 hours long, Saturdays are 5 hours long; attendance in the evening and on the allocated Saturdays is mandatory. There will be (up to) thirty evening sessions and five Saturdays.
A full schedule of confirmed dates will be given on the first session; we will do our best not to change any dates, but this occasionally happens due to unforeseen circumstances.
Saturday dates: 14th October 2023, 2nd December 2023, 10th February 2024, 23rd March 2024, 18th May 2024.
PLUS 20 hours mandatory online content
GCSE English is expected to take between 120 and 140 hours of study – you will attend taught classes for 100 hours, face to face in centre and complete an additional 20 hours mandatory on-line/homework tasks which will be marked and are a compulsory part of the course.
Some of you will need to spend more time self-studying to bring your skills up to the required level.
The course is fully funded by Cambridgeshire Skills – full attendance is required. You will complete an enrolment form, so that funding can be applied for; you will also need to provide your National Insurance number and show a form of photographic ID (passport, driving licence etc.). Failure to meet these criteria means that funding is withdrawn and you will be liable for the full cost of the course.
PLEASE NOTE: The final GCSE exams will take place during the day at Coleridge Community College. The dates are published by the exam board and all candidates must sit the exam then – expect to book leave / holiday from work / childcare as needed for the exam dates. Provisional dates are: Thursday 23/5/24 (morning) and Thursday 6/6/24 (morning). These will be confirmed by the exam board in due course.
Candidates should have studied English to Functional Skills Level 2 or have a recent GCSE Grade D (or equivalent). Please speak to the office if you have O-levels / CSEs or qualifications from outside the UK. All learners are required to complete an initial assessment / screening of English levels prior to enrolment on the course – please telephone the office on 01223 712340 to make an appointment.
If the assessor feels this course is not suitable in the initial assessment period they will signpost learners to alternative, more appropriate courses.
The exam board has very specific requirements for those who need access arrangements for exams (additional time, laptops, modified papers). It is your responsibility to provide the relevant supporting documents to the office if you require additional time or access arrangements for exams. Please note such arrangements are only granted for 3 years (by JCQ), and those granted by universities are not valid for GCSE exams.
By the end of the whole year course you will have the opportunity to:
• Take the GCSE Exam in English Language
• Express yourself well when speaking
• Structure and plan your writing effectively
• Read actively and critically, reading for meaning and subtlety
Pens, pencils, highlighters, A4 lined paper and a ring binder
Examination costs will be included in the cost of the course.

Our English for work courses are suitable for learners where English is not their first language.
This course is focused on people wanting to improve their English language skills for work. The level of this English for work course is lower advanced.
We will look at how to organise and look at a letter of application, use vocabulary for jobs and industries and make suggestions and give advice to someone.
This course intends to help students increase vocabulary, understand grammar use and improve pronunciation in order to gain confidence and proficiency. They will develop their ability to analyse complex text and engage in topical discussion with peers and native speakers. Some of the topics covered are: formal and informal introductions; asking and answering questions; writing for publications and analysing published works and composing assignments; asking for advice and making and responding to suggestions. No textbook is needed, and course materials will be provided.
The course is funded per term; you may find, as most learners do, that you will need more than one term to be prepared for any higher level courses or future exams (if you choose to enter for them). If this is the case you will be offered the opportunity to re-enrol and pay for another term (or if still available we may be able to fund you again).
If you are 19 or over, have lived in an EU country / the UK for 3 or more years and are at the right level, full funding is available. You will need to supply proof of identity and full attendance is required; you will also need to complete an enrolment form so that the office can apply for the funding and complete an individual learning plan weekly with your tutor.
If you are not eligible for funding but would benefit from the course, you can attend by paying a tuition fee of £145 (£87 concession) per 10 week term.
To confirm this course is the correct level for you an assessment test will be needed for placement purposes. To book an appointment, call the office on 01223 712340 or email office@adultlearning.education

Our English for work courses are suitable for learners where English is not their first language.
This online course is aimed at learners who have a good intermediate level of English but, because of limited English ability, struggle with certain aspects of their jobs, or even to get a job.
This course is taught online. To participate in online classes you will need an email address, a reliable internet connection, a computer/laptop/tablet with fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome).
You will need to attend the online course on both days – Wednesday and Thursday at the specified time.
You will gain confidence, improve your listening and written and spoken English. These skills will improve your chances of gaining employment, or to move up into a job with better pay and prospects. Part of the course will be based on the needs of individual learners; and this will be discussed in the first lesson. You will also learn about UK work culture, how it may differ from other countries, and the course will answer some of the questions you might have about the differences between your way of life and what you see around you in the UK.
Your English skills will define the jobs you can apply for in the UK, and improving those skills will help, not only in this country, but will greatly improve your employability and promotion prospects should you later return to your home country.
Poor English skills can have serious consequences – from language misunderstandings that can cause the loss of money or angry clients, to constant embarrassment at not being able to chat with clients and colleagues in a social context or even over lunch! You may be seen as unfriendly, or rude, which is also not good for your career.
The course is funded per term; you may find, as most learners do, that you will need more than one term to be prepared for any higher level courses or future exams (if you choose to enter for them). If this is the case you will be offered the opportunity to re-enrol and pay for another term (or if still available we may be able to fund you again)

If you are not eligible for funding but would benefit from the course, you can attend by paying a tuition fee of £290 (£174 concession) per 10 week term.
If you have not recently passed the PET exam, an assessment test will be needed for placement purposes. To book an appointment, call the office on 01223 712340 or email office@adultlearning.education

Recent events have taught us that sometimes we need to be able to express ourselves or occupy ourselves in new ways. Sometimes just for fun but sometimes to remain healthy. This course will offer learners the chance to challenge themselves, overcome obstacles through problem solving skills, find new means of expression (or develop existing ones). This can be done through the creation of artworks. In addition to this the record of a journey of development in the form of a journal can provide a useful and inspirational tool for personal expression and exploration of ideas. Combining these two closely connected practices will enable learners to develop confidence through step by step achievement of goals and milestones and improve their outlook by building a set of skills appropriate to them as individuals.
This course is funded by Cambridgeshire Skills, so full attendance is required; you will also need to complete an enrolment form so that the office can apply for the funding and complete an individual learning plan weekly with your tutor.
This course may be fully funded if:
You are over 19 years old
You live within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough combined authority
and have lived in the UK / an EEA country for the last 3 years.
Contact the office if you would like to confirm your eligibility.
If you do not qualify for funding but would still like to attend contact the office for a price.

I love the softness and variety of visual effects that you can achieve with felt. I use an easy relaxing technique to make felt pieces that does not result in aching arms, just beautiful work! Come and try it out, it’s fun and you can make new friends along the way. On the first day, you will create a suitable design and colour scheme for this project so that you will understand how to design your own piece in the future. Then you will make some pre-felt samples, learn how to blend colours and use resists. On the second day, you will combine these ideas together resulting in a unique, original and beautiful bag.

Have you ever wanted to try Pilates but you were not exactly sure what it involved and whether it would be suitable for you? Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being.
Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. The chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise.
It also focuses on the mind-body connection and breathing.
Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers while living in the UK. Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were closely connected.
This form of exercises will help you improve posture, mobility, muscular strength, balance and breathing technique. Each session will aim to build and develop from the previous session. This workout is designed to help you develop leaner, longer-looking muscles, establish core strength and stability and heighten mind-body awareness. Class numbers are limited which gives you an opportunity to interact and be corrected by your tutor.
Therefore Pilates not only improves your physical balance through correct posture but will also restore your mind-body balance.
This is a beginners plus course, some learners may have been attending a while. Some level of fitness and ability would be beneficial. If you are unsure, contact the office on 01223 712340
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
Enhance body awareness
Improve muscle strength
Learn breathing technique
Improve posture
Please bring a mat, a towel and a small cushion. Please also bring comfortable clothing that you can move in, trainers, socks and a bottle of water.

This workout is designed to help participants develop leaner, longer-looking muscles, establish core strength and stability and heighten mind-body awareness.
Class numbers are limited which gives you an opportunity to interact and be corrected by your tutor.
Because Pilates can be modified to provide either a gentle strength training program or a challenging workout, most people would have no problem with this form of exercise.
Good posture – Pilates will teach you to gain and maintain good posture. The exercises require that your body is always in alignment. This is especially beneficial if you suffer from lower back pain.
Muscle Tone – the exercises involve the use of muscles that you may not use on a daily basis. After the initial soreness, you’ll find that your muscles will be much more toned
Stronger abdominal muscles – Pilates focuses on strengthening your core which includes your abdominal muscles, you’ll find that one of the benefits of Pilates is that it will result in a flat stomach.
Flexibility – Pilates will restore your flexibility
Improves your balance – through the mind-body connection which is taught in Pilates you will become much more aware of how your body moves and performs. Therefore Pilates not only improves your physical balance through correct posture but will also restore your mind-body balance.
Pilates gives you a general sense of well-being – because it focuses on providing balance between your mind and body.
40 – 50 hours tuition

Brief Description:
Wax carving is a fascinating and intricate art form that involves sculpting and shaping malleable wax into intricate designs and patterns. It is a foundational technique in the world of jewellery making and metal casting. Use specialized tools to manipulate the wax, and bring creative visions to life in three-dimensional form. The wax models serve as the basis for creating moulds, which are then used to cast metal, such as silver or gold. Wax carving allows for intricate detailing and precise customization, making it a versatile and essential skill cherished by craftsmen in the realm of fine jewellery and artistic expression.

Do you love colour? Do you marvel at stained glass windows or blown glass? Have you ever wondered how glass is made and put together? Here is your chance to try a unique glass technique called ‘copperfoil,’ invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany which revolutionized the way that glass was made and put together. You will make small scale, delicate pieces using this method. The glass sheets are made using layers of colours that are then fixed together using a flatbed kiln. The textures are made by laying the glass onto a textured surface and then heating up the glass so that it melts into the texture. Finally, the glass is left to cool and then the texture remains in the glass once it has been ‘fixed’ by the heat process.
Originally, Tiffany wanted to replicate specific colours and textures that he saw in the landscape surrounding him, out of glass rather than painting onto clear glass. He used very small scale pieces to create his landscapes and lampshades. Glass is still made in the same way now as it was then. You will need a steady hand to cut the glass and lots of patience to learn to solder, but the results will be well worth the effort! During this short course you will learn to cut glass and grind the edges so that the copper foil sticks to it. You will then learn to solder the glass pieces together, attach a hook onto the back and patina it to make the glass shine and the soldered areas a beautiful copper or black finish. All my students have loved this course, and made some fantastic work. In fact, some of them have made a career from doing it! Try it, you will love it, too.
No experience necessary. Just lots of patience and a steady hand!
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to learn:

The course will provide instruction and support on how to compose and paint a still life in watercolours. Learners can choose their own image to paint either from photographs, paintings by other artists or their own objects (fruit or flowers for example). Aspects of design and composition will be covered as well as paint application and the use of colour.
Previous experience and knowledge will be built upon but there is no requirement for it as the course covers all ability levels. No previous experience is necessary.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
Please bring any objects, items or favourite things to paint. You can paint from photographs however it is better to print these beforehand. These do not need to be A4 size, A5 is fine. Nothing else – we will supply all materials needed for the day.
But if you would like to bring materials (or already have) see below:
Watercolour paper – this should be 140lb weight (300gsm) and in a surface of your choice (Not is the intermediate surface and most popular). A4 size pad, spiral bound is ideal.
Watercolour brushes – If you are trying watercolour painting for the first time it is advisable not to buy expensive sable brushes. Synthetic brushes are much cheaper and easily good enough. A round brush with a good point (size 5 or 6) will do for most techniques.
Watercolour paints – 1 red (alizarin crimson or cadmium red), 1 yellow (cadmium yell0w) and 1 blue (cobalt or ultramarine). Tubes are best. Student quality is fine.
Your tutor will advise you on other painting courses.

Writing life stories is about capturing personal experiences in a way that can be understood and enjoyed by others. Everyone has a story to tell because every one of us has lived a life unique to us. Some people want to set down their journey through life to pass on to children or grandchildren whilst others may want to write an account of their family history. Perhaps you have a diary written by a relative or letters or recordings of the stories told down through the generations that you would like to pull together in a way that can give others a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to be that person. Writing life stories always starts with the desire to explore what the intensely personal experience of living might be like from someone else’s perspective and sharing in that perspective can enrich our own lives.
Our recent personal and community experience of the COVID pandemic has led many of us to want to capture what we and others have been through in a way that means our memories of it can be revisited and never be forgotten. Memories that are shared remain relevant, teach us something about the past and present and, most importantly of all, are not lost as time moves on and the world changes around us.
So if you want to share memories of a loved one or tell your story to others or spark new interest in the experiences of a family member from the past, a short course of Writing Life Stories will lead you through how to go about getting started. If you know the skills required and the various ways of tackling and presenting a life story project your enjoyment of writing one will be enhanced, and the finished result will be something others will want to read.
