BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Do you need to update your CV? Did you not achieve your English qualification through school? Are you 19 years old or over?
This is a one year course that will enable you to take the GCSE exam in June* 2022.
The exams consist of two papers, Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing and Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives. Both are worth 50%. There is also a non-examination assessment in spoken language.
It is also necessary to give a presentation or speech.
Please note: as with all new-style GCSEs, grades A* – U have been replaced with levels 9 – 1. There is no tier for English GCSE so all grades are available. A Level 4 is a ‘standard pass’ (equivalent to the old grade C); a level 5 is a ‘good pass’.
This course starts in September 2021. Day and Time: Thursday 6.00-8.30 pm. Venue: Coleridge Community College.
Each week regular homework will be given which is directly linked to the class session and completion of this will enable you to make sense of the class work and for you to prepare for the exams. Good organisation will help you to get the most from the course. You will need to keep notes, be able to proofread and check writing tasks for errors and to speak in front of others in an assessed environment. Classes are informal and work very much on a communal basis where all are invited to share their viewpoints and ideas.
This is a challenging exam, and you must already be proficient at correctly using punctuation, grammar and spellings.
The course runs the whole year, including school holidays. Weekday sessions are 2.5 hours long, Saturdays are 5 hours long. There will be (up to) 30 evening sessions and five Saturdays.
A full schedule of confirmed dates will be given on the first session
You will need to attend tuition sessions on some Saturdays, the dates which have been agreed with the teacher but may be *subject to change are:- 13th November 2021, 4th December 2021, 5th February 2022, 19th March 2022, 21st May 2022.
PLUS 20 hours mandatory online content
GCSE English is expected to take between 120 and 140 hours of study – you will attend taught classes for 105 hours, face to face in centre and complete an additional 20 hours mandatory on-line content and the remaining hours are delivered through set homework tasks which will be marked and are a compulsory part of the course. ; it may be necessary to change to live streaming at times subject to government advice/COVID guidelines. To participate in online classes, you will need an email address, a reliable internet connection, a computer/laptop/tablet with fully updated browser. Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.
Some of you will need to spend more time self-studying to bring your skills up to the required level.
The course is fully funded by Cambridgeshire Skills – full attendance is required. You will complete an enrolment form, so that funding can be applied for; you will also need to provide your National Insurance number and show a form of photographic ID (passport, driving licence etc.). Failure to meet these criteria means that funding is withdrawn and you will be liable for the full cost of the course.
PLEASE NOTE: The final GCSE exams will take place during the day at Coleridge Community College. The dates are published by the exam board and all candidates must sit the exam then – Due to Government changes dates will be confirmed at the beginning of the course – expect to book leave / holiday from work / childcare as needed for the exam dates.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE NEEDED?
Candidates should have studied English to Functional Skills Level 2 or have a recent GCSE Grade D (or equivalent). Brief Description:
Have you ever wanted to try Pilates but you were not exactly sure what it involved and whether it would be suitable for you? Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being.
Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise.
Pilates also focuses on the mind-body connection and breathing.
Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers while living in the UK. Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were closely connected.
Beginner level exercises will help you improve posture, mobility, muscular strength and breathing technique. Each session will aim to build and develop from the previous session. This workout is designed to help you develop leaner, longer-looking muscles, establish core strength and stability and heighten mind-body awareness. Class numbers are limited which gives you an opportunity to interact and be corrected by your tutor.
Because Pilates can be modified to provide either a gentle strength training program or a challenging workout, most people would have no problem with this form of exercise. It is suitable both for beginners and for people who already exercise regularly.
As listed above, the health benefits include:
Good posture – Pilates will teach you to gain and maintain good posture. The exercises require that your body is always in alignment. This is especially beneficial if you suffer from lower back pain.
Muscle Tone – The exercises involve the use of muscles that you may not use on a daily basis. After the initial soreness, you’ll find that your muscles will become more toned.
Stronger abdominal muscles – Pilates focuses on strengthening your core which includes your abdominal muscles.
Flexibility – Pilates will increase your flexibility
Improves your balance – Through the mind-body connection which is taught in Pilates you will become much more aware of how your body moves and performs. Therefore Pilates not only improves your physical balance through correct posture but will also restore your mind-body balance.
Gives you a general sense of well-being – Because Pilates focuses on providing balance between your mind and body it gives you an overall sense of well-being.

Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility.
Brief Description:
In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise.
Pilates also focuses on the mind-body connection and breathing.
Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers while living in the UK. Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were closely connected.
Pilates Intermediate/Improvers is a continuation of Pilates Improvers class delivered in Cambridge. It incorporates exercises to help improve posture, mobility, muscular strength and breathing technique. Each session will aim to build and develop on from the previous session. This workout is designed to help participants develop leaner, longer-looking muscles, establish core strength and stability and heighten mind-body awareness.
Class numbers are limited which gives you an opportunity to interact and be corrected by your tutor.
Because Pilates can be modified to provide either a gentle strength training program or a challenging workout, most people would have no problem with this form of exercise.
The health benefits include:
Good posture – Pilates will teach you to gain and maintain good posture. The exercises require that your body is always in alignment. This is especially beneficial if you suffer from lower back pain.
Muscle Tone – The exercises involve the use of muscles that you may not use on a daily basis. After the initial soreness, you’ll find that your muscles will be much more toned
Stronger abdominal muscles – Pilates focuses on strengthening your core which includes your abdominal muscles, you’ll find that one of the benefits of Pilates is that it will result in a flat stomach.
Flexibility – Pilates will restore your flexibility
Improves your balance – Through the mind-body connection which is taught in Pilates you will become much more aware of how your body moves and performs. Therefore
Pilates not only improves your physical balance through correct posture but will also restore your mind-body balance.
Pilates gives you a general sense of well-being – Because Pilates focuses on providing balance between your mind and body it gives you an overall sense of well-being.

Brief description
This course will run for 3 consecutive days; on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Have you ever wondered how glass is made and put together? Here is your chance to try a unique glass technique called ‘copperfoil,’ invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany which revolutionised the way that glass was made and put together. Small scale, delicate pieces can be made using this method in just a few days. You will need a steady hand and lots of patience to learn this technique, but the results will be well worth the effort! You will create a unique and beautiful stained glass piece in just two days!
During the first part of the course we will concentrate upon working out suitable designs and colour scheme for a project.
The following will be studied during the course:
- Design skills
- Glass cutting methods
- Health & safety
- Brief history of glass/makers
- Copperfoil technique
- Soldering skills
You will learn how to create a design for a glass panel, cut glass, shape it using a grinding machine, copper foil it, and finally attach the fragments together using a soldering iron.
You will learn through demonstrations and discussion. You will be given the opportunity to create your own design so that you will understand how to design your own piece in the future, or use my template. By the end of the three days, you will make a fun decorative piece using coloured and textured glass.
FOR THE SESSION YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:
- Images for inspiration (essential)
- a pencil, a rubber and ruler (also available in centre)
- An apron, which is fabric or plastic coated
- A glass cutter (if you have one)
- An empty margarine pot
- 1 x A4 sheets of clear picture frame glass (Wilkinson’s clip frames are the best)
- a pair of scissors (also available in centre)
- a permanent silver/black pen
- Optional:Sequins, beads, buttons. Araldite or similar glue will be needed to affix these items to the glass
- Please also bring a packed lunch each day
EXTRA COSTS ON THE COURSE:
Tools and equipment will be provided.
Materials are NOT included in the course fee; There will be a fee of £20 to cover the costs of equipment and glass payable to the tutor on the first day.
Tools will be provided except the ones listed above which you will need to bring with you on the first day.

Brief Description
Writing life stories is about capturing personal experiences in a way that can be understood and enjoyed by others. Everyone has a story to tell because every one of us has lived a life unique to us. Some people want to set down their journey through life to pass on to children or grandchildren whilst others may want to write an account of their family history. Perhaps you have a diary written by a relative or letters or recordings of the stories told down through the generations that you would like to pull together in a way that can give others a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to be that person. Writing life stories always starts with the desire to explore what the intensely personal experience of living might be like from someone else’s perspective and sharing in that perspective can enrich our own lives.
Our recent personal and community experience of the COVID pandemic has led many of us to want to capture what we and others have been through in a way that means our memories of it can be revisited and never be forgotten. Memories that are shared remain relevant, teach us something about the past and present and, most importantly of all, are not lost as time moves on and the world changes around us.
So if you want to share memories of a loved one or tell your story to others or spark new interest in the experiences of a family member from the past, a short course of Writing Life Stories will lead you through how to go about getting started. If you know the skills required and the various ways of tackling and presenting a life story project your enjoyment of writing one will be enhanced, and the finished result will be something others will want to read.
This course is funded by Cambridgeshire Skills, so full attendance is required; you will also need to complete an enrolment form so that the office can apply for the funding and complete an individual learning plan weekly with your tutor.
This course is fully funded if:
You are over 19 years old

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
None.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
- Identify the different ways a life story can be told.
- Recognise what makes a life story interesting and compelling.

- Write a short piece of memoir.
