Do you need to update your CV? Did you not achieve your Maths qualification through school? Are you 19 years old or over?
General content headings are number, algebra, ratio proportion and rates of change, geometry and measure, probability, statistics. The majority of the course will cover the Foundation syllabus; the tutor will use Higher Tier extension materials where appropriate and the college offers learners the option to be entered into the Higher Tier exams, however this option requires learners to independently study in their own time.
Foundation tier: grades 1 to 5. Higher tier: grades 4 to 9.
The course runs for 30 live-streamed online sessions, and runs the whole year, including five in person mandatory exam preparation Saturday day schools which are held at Coleridge Community College. Live-streamed Saturday sessions are 2.5 hours long, face to face in centre Saturdays are 5 hours long. A full schedule of dates will be given out on the first session; we will do our best not to change any dates, but this occasionally happens due to unforeseen circumstances. To participate in the live-streamed online classes, you will need an email address, a reliable internet connection, a computer/laptop/tablet with fully updated browser. Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.
Saturday dates (in centre): 11th November 2023, 9th December 2023, 3rd February 2024, 9th March 2024, 11th May 2024.
The course will be taught as a linear course and certification is available in May/June 2024, the qualification consists of three equally weighted written examination papers. All three papers must be at the same tier of entry and must be completed in May/June 2024. Each paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Paper 1 is a non-calculator exam; a calculator is allowed for Paper 2 and Paper 3.
GCSE maths is expected to take between 120 and 140 hours of study – you will attend taught classes for 100 hours, and complete an additional 20 hours mandatory content – through set homework tasks which will be marked and are a compulsory part of the course. You will need to spend more time self-studying certain topics to bring your skills up to the required level. You are required to have independent study skills, and to set yourself appropriate goals and targets. Your tutor will assess your progress through the lessons and by homework.
The course is fully funded by Cambridgeshire Skills – full attendance is required. You will complete an enrolment form, so that funding can be applied for; you will also need to provide your National Insurance number and show a form of photographic ID (passport, driving licence etc.). Handmade Stained Glass Christmas decorations – what could be better! Have you ever wondered how glass is made and put together? Here is your chance to try a unique glass technique called ‘copper foil’, invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany, which revolutionised the way that glass was made and put together. Small scale, delicate pieces can be made using this method. You will need a steady hand and lots of patience to learn this technique, but the results will be well worth the effort! You will create a unique and beautiful copper foil glass Christmas decoration using a combination of coloured glass and glass globs if desired.
During the first part of the day, we will concentrate upon working out how to cut, foil and solder glass together. Then you will create a suitable design and colour scheme for this project so that you will understand how to design your own piece in the future.

The following will be covered during the course:
Design skills
Brief history of glass/makers
Glass cutting methods
Grinding & soldering
Copper foil technique

Brief Description:
This workshop of how to draft a bodice is particularly great if you want to start making your own designs or if you struggle to get commercial sewing patterns to fit.
It will teach you how to create a bodice block to fit your own body measurements. Taking measurements and plotting these onto pattern paper you’ll create a simple sewing pattern that will then be made up in fabric and will fit your shape perfectly.
This pattern / sloper can then be used as a basis when creating your own sewing patterns or as a guide when adapting commercial sewing patterns. We will also discuss how adjustments to the basic block can create different garment styles.
Pattern drafting paper will be provided and instruction worksheets are supplied so that you can repeat the process again in your own time if needed for yourself and others.
Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
Previous dressmaking experience is beneficial to get the most out of the workshop.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
- Take body measurements correctly for pattern drafting
- Create a bodice block sloper
- Understand how to adapt the pattern for other styles, e.g. move darts, change necklines etc
- Have the tools to create made to measure bodice blocks for others

What you will need to bring will be a calculator (one on a phone is fine), pencil, paper scissors, ruler, tape measure, half a meter of calico or other non stretch fabric to make a toile of the bodice. A sewing machine, fabric scissors and thread.
The college does have sewing machines If you’d like to borrow one rather than bringing your own.
On completion of this course, what might your next steps be?
To enrol on a pattern drafting course, or start to design your own made to measure patterns.

Paul HumphreysI hold a BA (Hons) in International Studies with the OU and an MA (Merit) in International Relations (IR) with Anglia Ruskin University. I am currently a doctoral research student with Brunel University researching the effects of the H.M. Governments PREVENT counter-terrorism strategy on professionals working in public welfare services. I have studied geopolitical events for many years and have always found it a fascinating subject. In terms of IR I am a adherent of the realist school of thought. I think a good understanding of IR has never been so important, because the current global order is in a state of flux and the West is facing the distinct possibility of decline and being eclipsed by a rising East Asia led by China.

Live-streamed Saturday sessions are 2.5 hours long, face to face in centre Saturdays are 5 hours long.
