Brief Description:
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at willow weaving? Come to this weekend in Cambridge and learn weaving techniques to create a medium, round basket using traditional basketry techniques.
The two day basketry course will teach you how to weave a medium sized round basket using willow. You will learn how to prepare willow for weaving, how to purchase supplies and how to grow your own willow.
This course will cover making a round base using a pairing weave, staking up, weaving an upsett, weaving the sides using traditional techniques and adding a border and handle.
You will learn a variety of weaves including French and English Randing, three rod wale and a rod border.
Previous Experience and Knowledge needed?
Some weaving experience is useful but not essential.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
- Learn more about using willow to create functional and decorative baskets.
- Learn about the materials, preparation and tools required to make a basket.
- Create a round basket.

For the first session you will need to bring:
A notepad and pen. Please also bring a packed lunch each day

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at willow weaving? Come to this weekend in Cambridge and learn weaving techniques to create an asymmetric basket using traditional basketry techniques.
This two day workshop is suitable for those with some previous weaving experience. You will learn how to weave a contemporary round based willow basket, how to select appropriate material for the basket and be guided through each stage of the basket making process to create a contemporary asymmetric basket
Previous Experience and Knowledge needed?
Some previous weaving experience would be beneficial.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
- Create a circular base, add upright stakes and the upsett
- Weaving the sides using traditional weaving patterns: French randing, English randing and double French randing and a double zig zag weave.
- Creating a staggered border
- Preparing and installing a wooden handle
