Brush up on you dressmaking/sewing techniques with the one day course, which will cover a variety of different skills. The day will cover different seam finishes, button holes, shirring, gathers, rolled hems, under stitching and top stitching and more. You’ll have a chance to create samples of each of these techniques.

Great for beginners as well as those wanting to improve their dressmaking.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have improved your dressmaking knowledge and be able to carry out these techniques in the professional way.

You’ll need to bring non-stretch, scrap fabrics for samples, your usual sewing equipment and something to make notes on. You can either bring your own sewing machine to work on, or use a machine provided by the college.

A dressmaking twilight course that covers the core skills in garment construction including: introduction to the sewing machine, dressmaking terminology, learning how to take correct measurements and garment construction techniques.
Please note this class is having a ‘double’ half term break – so NO CLASS on the 22nd October or the 29th October 2024.

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to improve their dressmaking skills.
LEARNING OUTCOMES.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE (3 TERMS)
- Know how to use a sewing machine.
- Learn how to use dressmaking patterns.
- Understand the importance of a well fitted garment.
- Know how to assemble a garment in the correct order.
- How to sew seams, hems and closures, pockets, elasticated waistbands, etc.
INTERMEDIATES:
- Know how to sew using stretch fabric.
- Learn more challenging techniques such as welt pockets, plackets etc
- Make garments including more complicated skills and processes
Extra costs on the course:
In order to make a garment you will need to purchase fabric, a pattern and a sewing kit.
Other haberdashery items, such as zips elastic etc, are required for creating samples but will be advised by the tutor during the course.
FOR THE FIRST SESSION YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:
A sewing machine and power cable. The college have machines available to use so please do not buy a machine before you are confident that you will use one.
Scraps of non stretch fabric for creating samples.

Learn how to use a sewing machine, how to use a sewing pattern and how to make a basic pair of pyjama bottoms, with pockets!
