Brief Description

This course is aimed at anyone who would like to know more about European painting between 1945 –1995. It will be a basic introduction to selected art movements during this period starting with the influences upon the Abstract Expressionist Movement, how it affected European countries, focusing essentially upon painting, sculpture and installations. We will look at contemporary artist’s such as Tracy Emin, Mark Rothko, Carl Andre and Banksy, and conclude with the controversial work of the Sensationalists, including Damien Hirst, Ron Mueck and Sam Taylor-Wood. Artists and their work will be studied each week so that students can gain an insight into how the periods linked together, and why they were seen to be so important during this fast developing era.
