Brief Description

This course is aimed at anyone who would like to know more about European painting between 1945 –1995. It will be a basic introduction to selected art movements during this period starting with the influences upon the Abstract Expressionist Movement, how it affected European countries, focusing essentially upon painting, sculpture and installations. We will look at contemporary artist’s such as Tracy Emin, Mark Rothko, Carl Andre and Banksy, and conclude with the controversial work of the Sensationalists, including Damien Hirst, Ron Mueck and Sam Taylor-Wood. Artists and their work will be studied each week so that students can gain an insight into how the periods linked together, and why they were seen to be so important during this fast developing era.

 

Learning outcome:

You will learn through a series of power point presentations, worksheets and class discussions.

 

Extra costs on the course:

You will need a notepad and pen. No other costs involved.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a free trip to the Murray Edwards College in Cambridge on Wed 24 April. 10am- 12 noon. Please meet at the entrance to the College for the first class.

Lisa FretwellMy name is Lisa E Fretwell. I have been teaching art, glass and textile techniques for over 20 years. In the past, I have exhibited my work in New York, had a touring exhibition around the UK, and exhibited Gallery and non-Gallery venues in Hertfordshire, Leicester, London and Northamptonshire. I was involved involved in the publishing of a new book called ‘Antarctic Atlas,’ which includes my hand drawn illustrations. I am currently making hand drawn illustrated cards to create funding for a Hedgehog charity called Hoggywobbles in Cambridgeshire. Since 2012 I have been teaching Art History, Stained Glass and felt making in Cambridge. I sold some original illustrations with Bonham's Auctioneer's from our book, Antarctic Atlas, at St. Bride's Foundation, London in June 2023..
