Brief Description:
A single section binding is the basis of Western bookbinding. It is fairly easy to bind a single section but you have to understand how to handle materials and tools to achieve a good result. We are going to use an A2 sheet of paper, linen thread. We also handle a bookbinding knife and needle.
The tutor will give you a brief history of Western and Japanese bookbinding which will give you some insights of development of books and various writing tools.
For a comparison, you will be introduced to a traditional Japanese book binding which is also fairly easy to make. We will use Japanese paper and cotton thread.
In this day school you will be handling sharp tools so you must listen to health and safety instructions and take care in handling tools for your safety.

If you have your own pencils, brushes, paints and paper please bring these. You should also bring any small scale objects you would like to paint; this can include photographs, books, fruit, flowers- anything you are interested in. A still life will be set up which will be optional.
A note on photographs- if you choose to photograph your own still life to work from, please ensure it has good directional light which shows good light on one side and shadows on the opposite. This makes the painting much more impactful.

In the past, I have exhibited my work in New York, had a touring exhibition around the UK, and exhibited Gallery and non-Gallery venues in Hertfordshire, Leicester, London and Northamptonshire. I was involved in the publishing of a new book called ‘Antarctic Atlas,’ which includes my hand drawn illustrations. I am currently making hand drawn illustrated cards to create funding for a Hedgehog charity called Hoggywobbles in Cambridgeshire. Since 2012 I have been teaching Art History, Stained Glass and Felt Making in Cambridge. Lisa CrampHi I'm Lisa Cramp and I run an upholstery business where I take in commissions and I also teach upholstery. I have run my business since 2007 and I started teaching in 2015. I find both sides of my business very rewarding. It is full of meeting new people and working on some fantastic projects. The teaching is especially rewarding and I've made some amazing friends along the way. Most learners stay with me for years, no pressure :-). Upholstery is addictive and can be stress relieving and it's very creative. I look forward to meeting you and for you to join the group.
