Enjoy the art of weaving pliable willow into three-dimensional objects. 

This workshop will teach you how to make a round willow basket.  You will learn a variety of weaving techniques and be encouraged to design your own basket, choosing from a range of willows, weaving styles and basket sizes.

The wax models serve as the basis for creating moulds, which are then used to cast metal, such as silver or gold. Wax carving allows for intricate detailing and precise customization, making it a versatile and essential skill cherished by craftsmen in the realm of fine jewellery and artistic expression.

Manual dexterity is needed. No prior knowledge of working with silver is needed.

Brief description

Do you love colour? Do you marvel at stained glass windows or blown glass? Have you ever wondered how glass is made and put together? Here is your chance to try a unique glass technique called ‘copperfoil,’ invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany which revolutionized the way that glass was made and put together. You will make small scale, delicate pieces using this method. The glass sheets are made using layers of colours that are then fixed together using a flatbed kiln. The textures are made by laying the glass onto a textured surface and then heating up the glass so that it melts into the texture. Finally, the glass is left to cool and then the texture remains in the glass once it has been ‘fixed’ by the heat process.

Originally, Tiffany wanted to replicate specific colours and textures that he saw in the landscape surrounding him, out of glass rather than painting onto clear glass. He used very small scale pieces to create his landscapes and lampshades.  Glass is still made in the same way now as it was then.  You will need a steady hand to cut the glass and lots of patience to learn to solder, but the results will be well worth the effort!  During this short course you will learn to cut glass and grind the edges so that the copper foil sticks to it. You will then learn to solder the glass pieces together, attach a hook onto the back and patina it to make the glass shine and the soldered areas a beautiful copper or black finish. All my students have loved this course, and made some fantastic work. In fact, some of them have made a career from doing it! Try it, you will love it, too.

Brief description:

The course will provide instruction and support on how to compose and paint a still life in watercolours. Learners can choose their own image to paint either from photographs, paintings by other artists or their own objects (fruit or flowers for example). Aspects of design and composition will be covered as well as paint application and the use of colour.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Previous experience and knowledge will be built upon but there is no requirement for it as the course covers all ability levels. No previous experience is necessary.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session you will be able to:

• Arrange a still life
• Select the important shapes
• Effectively use colour to create shapes and form
• Select, mix and apply colours according to their own preferences.
• Choose from a range of techniques and studio practices to enable them to achieve their goals (flat washes, blended washes, textured marks).
• Experiment with a range of innovative techniques and develop them to suit individual outcomes.

Please bring any objects, items or favourite things to paint. You can paint from photographs however it is better to print these beforehand. These do not need to be A4 size, A5 is fine. Nothing else – we will supply all materials needed for the day.

Watercolour paper – this should be 140lb weight (300gsm) and in a surface of your choice (Not is the intermediate surface and most popular). A4 size pad, spiral bound is ideal.
Watercolour brushes – If you are trying watercolour painting for the first time it is advisable not to buy expensive sable brushes. Synthetic brushes are much cheaper and easily good enough. A round brush with a good point (size 5 or 6) will do for most techniques.
Watercolour paints – 1 red (alizarin crimson or cadmium red), 1 yellow (cadmium yell0w) and 1 blue (cobalt or ultramarine). Tubes are best. Student quality is fine.

Fancy going big with your flower arrangement? Have fun creating a larger scale floral design with impact on this morning session. All materials included but you will need to bring a bucket or pedestal stand if you have one. This is a suitable design for a party, event, wedding or church florals.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

No knowledge required, just a love of flowers. Please notify the college of any plant allergies before the course.

• Apply techniques to create a larger scale floral arrangement including best sustainable practice.
• Know how to care from your completed floral work to maximise its life.

This short Confidence with Maths course, runs for 11 hours, and is for adults who need to begin to learn Maths again. It will help you to feel more confident in using numbers for everyday situations involving money, time, distance, shape and position.
The course will be held in centre at Galfrid Community Wing, Galfrid Road, Cambridge, CB5 8ND.
No previous experience is required. Please contact the office if you have qualifications from outside the UK to check equivalency.
This course is key to you finding out about the full year course. It will include introductory sessions on Number, Measure, Data, guidance about which level you are working at and an overview of the Functional Skills syllabus and assessments. Work will be set each week, to be completed before the following lesson. An individual learning plan will be completed weekly with your tutor.
The course is fully funded by Cambridgeshire Skills – full attendance is required. You will complete an enrolment form, so that funding can be applied for; you will also need to provide your National Insurance number and show a form of photographic ID (passport, driving licence etc.)

Upcycle your furniture and bring new life to an old favourite with this Upholstery course! This is a practical course for both beginners and advanced learners. You will start with a ‘drop in’ seat, simple chair or stool and progress to more complex projects such as an armchair or headboard. This course will include both traditional and modern upholstery techniques.

Brief Description

Writing life stories is about capturing personal experiences in a way that can be understood and enjoyed by others. Everyone has a story to tell because every one of us has lived a life unique to us. Some people want to set down their journey through life to pass on to children or grandchildren whilst others may want to write an account of their family history. Perhaps you have a diary written by a relative or letters or recordings of the stories told down through the generations that you would like to pull together in a way that can give others a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to be that person. Writing life stories always starts with the desire to explore what the intensely personal experience of living might be like from someone else’s perspective and sharing in that perspective can enrich our own lives. 

Our recent personal and community experience of the COVID pandemic has led many of us to want to capture what we and others have been through in a way that means our memories of it can be revisited and never be forgotten. Memories that are shared remain relevant, teach us something about the past and present and, most importantly of all, are not lost as time moves on and the world changes around us. 

So if you want to share memories of a loved one or tell your story to others or spark new interest in the experiences of a family member from the past, a short course of Writing Life Stories will lead you through how to go about getting started. If you know the skills required and the various ways of tackling and presenting a life story project your enjoyment of writing one will be enhanced, and the finished result will be something others will want to read. 

This course may be funded by Cambridgeshire Skills, so full attendance is required; you will also need to complete an enrolment form so that the office can apply for the funding and complete an individual learning plan weekly with your tutor.

This course may be fully funded if:
You are over 19 years old
You live within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough combined authority
and have lived in the UK / an EEA country for the last 3 years.

Please note: this year learners will be asked for their annual income. There will be a certain threshold (which we are currently waiting for further guidance). If the income exceeds the threshold there will be a small fee to contribute (no more than £10), the funding will subsidise the rest of the cost.

Brief Description:

Have you ever wanted to try Pilates but you were not exactly sure what it involved and whether it would be suitable for you? Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being.

Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise.
Pilates also focuses on the mind-body connection and breathing.
Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers while living in the UK. Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were closely connected.
Beginner level exercises will help you improve posture, mobility, muscular strength and breathing technique. Each session will aim to build and develop from the previous session. This workout is designed to help you develop leaner, longer-looking muscles, establish core strength and stability and heighten mind-body awareness. Class numbers are limited which gives you an opportunity to interact and be corrected by your tutor.
Because Pilates can be modified to provide either a gentle strength training program or a challenging workout, most people would have no problem with this form of exercise. It is suitable both for beginners and for people who already exercise regularly.
As listed above, the health benefits include:
Good posture – Pilates will teach you to gain and maintain good posture. The exercises require that your body is always in alignment. This is especially beneficial if you suffer from lower back pain.
Muscle Tone – The exercises involve the use of muscles that you may not use on a daily basis. After the initial soreness, you’ll find that your muscles will become more toned.
Stronger abdominal muscles – Pilates focuses on strengthening your core which includes your abdominal muscles.
Flexibility – Pilates will increase your flexibility
Improves your balance – Through the mind-body connection which is taught in Pilates you will become much more aware of how your body moves and performs. Therefore Pilates not only improves your physical balance through correct posture but will also restore your mind-body balance.
Gives you a general sense of well-being – Because Pilates focuses on providing balance between your mind and body it gives you an overall sense of well-being.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A dressmaking twilight course that covers the core skills in garment construction including: introduction to the sewing machine, dressmaking terminology, learning how to take correct measurements and garment construction techniques.

Please note this class is having a ‘double’ half term break – so NO CLASS on the 22nd October or the 29th October 2024.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to improve their dressmaking skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE (3 TERMS)

• Know how to use a sewing machine.
• Learn how to use dressmaking patterns.
• Understand the importance of a well fitted garment.
• Know how to assemble a garment in the correct order.
• How to sew seams, hems and closures, pockets, elasticated waistbands, etc.

INTERMEDIATES:

This course may be funded by Cambridgeshire Skills, so full attendance is required; you will also need to complete an enrolment form so that the office can apply for the funding and complete an individual learning plan weekly with your tutor.

This course may be fully funded if:
You are over 19 years old
You live within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough combined authority
and have lived in the UK / an EEA country for the last 3 years.

Please note: this year learners will be asked for their annual income. There will be a certain threshold (which we are currently waiting for further guidance). If the income exceeds the threshold there will be a small fee to contribute (no more than £10), the funding will subsidise the rest of the cost.

Brief Description:

Have you ever wanted to try Pilates but you were not exactly sure what it involved and whether it would be suitable for you? Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being.

Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise.
Pilates also focuses on the mind-body connection and breathing.
Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers while living in the UK. Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were closely connected.
Beginner level exercises will help you improve posture, mobility, muscular strength and breathing technique. Each session will aim to build and develop from the previous session. This workout is designed to help you develop leaner, longer-looking muscles, establish core strength and stability and heighten mind-body awareness. Class numbers are limited which gives you an opportunity to interact and be corrected by your tutor.
Because Pilates can be modified to provide either a gentle strength training program or a challenging workout, most people would have no problem with this form of exercise. It is suitable both for beginners and for people who already exercise regularly.
As listed above, the health benefits include:
Good posture – Pilates will teach you to gain and maintain good posture. The exercises require that your body is always in alignment. This is especially beneficial if you suffer from lower back pain.

A dressmaking twilight course that covers the core skills in garment construction including: introduction to the sewing machine, dressmaking terminology, learning how to take correct measurements and garment construction techniques.

Please note this class is having a ‘double’ half term break – so NO CLASS on the 22nd October or the 29th October 2024.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to improve their dressmaking skills.

Brief Description

Writing life stories is about capturing personal experiences in a way that can be understood and enjoyed by others. Everyone has a story to tell because every one of us has lived a life unique to us. Some people want to set down their journey through life to pass on to children or grandchildren whilst others may want to write an account of their family history. Perhaps you have a diary written by a relative or letters or recordings of the stories told down through the generations that you would like to pull together in a way that can give others a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to be that person. Writing life stories always starts with the desire to explore what the intensely personal experience of living might be like from someone else’s perspective and sharing in that perspective can enrich our own lives. 

Our recent personal and community experience of the COVID pandemic has led many of us to want to capture what we and others have been through in a way that means our memories of it can be revisited and never be forgotten. Memories that are shared remain relevant, teach us something about the past and present and, most importantly of all, are not lost as time moves on and the world changes around us. 

So if you want to share memories of a loved one or tell your story to others or spark new interest in the experiences of a family member from the past, a short course of Writing Life Stories will lead you through how to go about getting started.
