Brief Description:
This course is aimed at anyone new to patchwork and quilting and those who wish to improve their skills by working under the guidance of the tutor on a personal project. The latter may suit those who have attended in previous terms.
Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
Basic experience in using a sewing machine is essential, such as being able to wind a bobbin, thread up the machine and sew in a straight line.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the 10-week course, you will have the opportunity to:
· learn all about fabric preparation and how to use the correct tools and equipment such as a rotary cutter, rulers and cutting mat.
· sew an accurate ¼” seam and understand why it’s important.
· make some basic blocks and develop them into a finished product.
· combine all your blocks to make a ‘quilt sandwich’
· learn how to quilt your work and turn it into a table runner or wall hanging
· develop your creativity
Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment
The centre has several sewing machines to use or you may prefer to bring your own. Whilst not essential, more progress will be made if learners have access to a sewing machine at home.
For the first session you will need to bring:
Your fabric scissors, pins, a notebook and a few plastic bobbins. The school has Janome machines. Ideally, a reel of 50s weight sewing cotton in a neutral colour. Very quickly you will need a personal rotary cutter (45 mm recommended), a small cutting mat (with inch markings) and a basic acrylic quilting ruler. We will begin with some basic techniques so you will need two plain contrasting fabrics each about 20” square. After this first lesson we will discuss what to purchase to make a wall hanging or table runner in time for Christmas.
On completion of this course, what might your next steps be?
Consider returning for another term where you can pick up where you left off to extend your skills with more complex work.
