Flower Arranging: Japanese Ikebana (May Day school)

Join a hands-on 2.5-hour course exploring the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Learn how Ikebana reflects nature and the seasons, with a focus on early summer designs.

 

Brief Description: 

You will be introduced to Ikebana, the Japanese Art of Flower arrangement, both Shoinbana, traditional Koryu Seika style ikebana, and Jiyuuka, free style ikebana, how it relates to nature, and the four seasons. This time you will be introduced early summer arrangements and settings. Your tutor will discuss Ikebana and Western flower arrangement and demonstrate different style of Ikebana.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?  

No previous experience or knowledge of flower arrangement is required. Learners who have an interest in Japanese culture, or some knowledge of Ikebana or western flower arrangement and beginners are welcome.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

Learn about what Ikebana is.

Learn to practice and enjoy basic Ikebana with plants and containers for Spring and early summer.

Take your own Ikebana home to enjoy, and rearrange to fit the perfect shape in your room.

 
Extra costs on the course for example, textbook, materials or equipment.

Flower materials have been included in your course fee (flowers, branches, leafy materials are included). 

You are also required to purchase a Kenzan, however, you can use the tutors in the classroom if you choose not to purchase one for the session. 

 

For the first session, you will need to bring:

A pair of strong scissors or secateurs and a large bowl or container, for example, a salad bowl, frying pan size is ideal.  
A Kenzan: (a device used in ikebana for fixing the flowers in the container. You can buy from the internet if you do not already have one. Just type in “kenzan” Any shape is ok, round or square. You will find that bigger and metal ones are better. If you could not get one, you are still welcome to join the workshop and use the tutor’s kenzan during the workshop (you will not be able to take the tutor's equipment home).

Please bring a Binbag a crate or wrapping paper to transport your own Ikebana. 

On completion of this course, what might your next steps be?  

The learners can progress to the next level and other seasons through additional workshops.
The tutor will advise you.
