Duration : 9 Weeks

| Arts & Craft

Explore the colour and beauty of European Art.

Brief Description

This course is aimed at anyone who would like to know more about European painting between 1880–1920. It will be a basic introduction to the main art movements during this period, including the Pre-Raphaelites, Impressionism, Symbolism, Secessionism and The Glasgow Style. A wide range of artists, including Klimt, Morisot, Waterhouse, Macintosh and more, will be studied each week so that students can gain an insight into how the periods linked together, and why these particular artists and their works were so important during this fast-developing era.

For anyone who didn't go on the Trip to the 'Renoir in Love' exhibition' , there will be the opportunity to see an Arts Screening about the exhibition on Tuesday 19 Jan at 6pm, At the Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge. This will cost approx. £15, unless you are a Member, and then it's cheaper.

Learning outcome:

You will learn through a series of PowerPoint presentations, worksheets, video clips, quizzes and lively class discussions.

Extra costs on the course:

To be booked individually by students who are Members of the Gallery. Non-members will need to book via the Tutor. Lisa will discuss the details in more detail during the first week of the course.

Lisa Fretwell

My name is Lisa E Fretwell. I have been teaching art, glass and textile techniques for over 25 years. In the past, I have exhibited my work in New York, had a touring exhibition around the UK, and exhibited in Gallery and non-Gallery venues in Hertfordshire, Leicester, London and Northamptonshire. I was involved in the publishing of a new book called ‘Antarctic Atlas,’ in 2020 which includes my hand drawn illustrations.  Since 2012 I have been teaching Art History, Stained Glass and Felt Making in Cambridge. I sold some original illustrations with Bonham's Auctioneer's from our book, Antarctic Atlas, at St. Bride's Foundation, London in June 2023. Over the past year, I have been editing and illustrating a new book with my husband entitled, The Penguin book of penguins. It is one of the books celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Penguin books. It will be available to buy as of Sept 18 in all good bookshops, and it contains my hand drawn illustrations.
