This course will introduce you to beginners pattern cutting in women’s wear, using block pattern manipulation techniques.

 

Brief Description

Learners can join at any time; however, depending on previous experience, you will begin with developing skirt blocks before progressing to create a set of basic blocks using your own measurements.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Previous dressmaking experience will be beneficial.

Learning Outcomes:

This course will be organised in the following way:

Term 1
Draft a skirt block using your own measurements  
Learn how to adapt the block to produce different styles  
Design and make a skirt

Term 2/3
Draft a complete bodice block using your own measurements  
Learn how to adapt the block to produce different styles  
Design and make a top

Term 3 (last 5 weeks)
Draft a trouser block using your own measurements
It is not advised for new learners to join in the 3rd term due to the complicated tasks taught. If you have experience but are unsure if this course is suitable please contact the office to speak with the tutor.

Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment

Sewing kit which includes: scissors, fabric scissors,  pins and metric tape measure.
Paper scissors, sticky tape, calico, pattern  cutting paper (this can be purchased from the tutor), metre rule

You will need a sewing machine at home to enable you to complete the homework.

Linda Couch works as a theatrical and re-enactment costume maker and bridal seamstress for over twenty years. Additionally, she has her own successful costume label Milly Maybe. She also teaches dressmaking and creative sewing workshops for all levels for both adults and children.
