Brief Description
This dressmaking course, over 3 Saturdays, is for beginners to help them learn the essentials and build confidence.
Your classes will be on: 17th October, 7th November and 28th November
Learners will learn essential dressmaking skills, including: how to use and thread a sewing machine, how to use and follow a shop bought garment pattern, to then be able to construction a garment, and take measurements and choose the correct fabrics.
Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?
This dressmaking course is suitable for complete beginners with no experience of using a sewing machine or making a garment. People with some experience, who wish to improve, are also welcome.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:
Week 1
Learn about the basic kit needed for dressmaking
Understand how to use and read sewing patterns
Learn about fabrics.
Learn how to take measurements.
Make a basic pair of pyjama bottoms using a pattern.
Week 2
Learn how to use and make up your item bringing in your own pattern and some old fabric - for example a duvet etc.
Create samples using your old fabric.
Learn how to insert components such as zips or elastic for your pattern (bring a zip between 10 - 15 cm)
Learn how to insert a dart.
Week 3
Make the pyjama bottoms as practised from week 1 - but using your own chosen material.
Or make your own item from the pattern you chose in week 2.
(Please make sure you wash all fabric before use).
Extra costs on the course for example text book, materials or equipment:
If you have any of these items please bring them to each week: good fabric scissors, paper scissors (big), pins, thread - good quality such as Gutterman or Coats, tape measure, elastic for the waistband, light interfacing (50 cm - 1 m needed).
In order to make a garment you will need to purchase fabric, a pattern and a sewing kit. This will be discussed in more detail in the first week.
For the first session you will need to bring:
A sewing machine and power cable. The college have a few machines available to use so please do not buy a machine before you are confident that you will use one.
Scraps of non-stretch fabric for creating samples. An old duvet cover is ideal (single or double) - nothing expensive until you gain confidence!
A notebook, tape measure, pencil and pen.
