Brief Description:

This course will provide instruction and support on how to compose and paint in watercolours.

Do you have a favourite artist or painting you would like to copy? Or you can choose your own images to paint either from photographs, paintings by other artists or your own objects. The course will cover background information on different art movements, how to examine a painting and how to approach actually painting it.

Instruction will be given on starting a painting, mixing colours accurately and use of brushwork to get the effects you want, ending up with a painting in the style of your choice.

Course Aims

Learners will explore design and composition including the use of colour, values and masses to appreciate how and why choices were made by artists when creating works of art. This knowledge will be applied to a painting to develop this appreciation and confidence in the longer term.

Drawing Skills Brief Description:

Drawing skills can be done for pleasure, relaxation or with a more defined purpose. The course will explore what drawing is, what it can be for and why we do it. We will cover practical aspects of drawing mark making, creating the illusion of 3 Dimensions, the use of pattern and design and the formal arrangement of tone and shape to create an image. We will explore colour, different media, the theoretical side of drawing and how to look, examine and see what is actually there.

Previous Experience needed:

No previous experience necessary, the course is designed for all levels.

Aims of the course:

• The course will enable learners to see in new ways, changing perception of the visual world
• Develop a visual language through experimentation and widen understanding of what drawing is
• Gain in confidence through problem solving

• Identify a range of marks to get the effect they want
• Identify shapes and tones to create an image
• Use line and colour to express themselves

Brief Description:

Come along to the East Asian Painting course if you want to explore, in a relaxed environment, a variety of Chinese and Japanese watercolour techniques, such as a study of Calligraphy and how its techniques are applied to painting. You will also learn from a wide selection of past masters and be able to develop your skills in further courses. Group exhibitions are held every two years, visits to galleries organised for those interested.

No previous experience necessary. All ability levels welcome.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A dressmaking twilight course that covers the core skills in garment construction including: introduction to the sewing machine, dressmaking terminology, learning how to take correct measurements and garment construction techniques.

Please note this class is having a ‘double’ half term break – so NO CLASS on the 22nd October or the 29th October 2024.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to improve their dressmaking skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE (3 TERMS)

• Know how to use a sewing machine.
• Learn how to use dressmaking patterns.
• Understand the importance of a well fitted garment.
• Know how to assemble a garment in the correct order.
• How to sew seams, hems and closures, pockets, elasticated waistbands, etc.

INTERMEDIATES:

• Know how to sew using stretch fabric.

Description:

Would you like to know more about famous artists? Would you like to join a friendly, enthusiastic group? If so, join my class! You don’t need a background in art to join, just a desire to know more. You will look at a different artist or sculptor each week, learn a bit more about their life and how their work developed during their career. We will look at a mix of traditional and living artists including Pablo Picasso, Andy Goldsworthy, Wassily Kandinsky, M.C Escher and Anthony Gormley. Using vibrant images, video clips, a few quizzes and possibly trips along the way. This course is fun, educational, and always inspiring!

Brief Description

On our Dressmaking course you will be guided through the purchase of fabrics and patterns. You will learn how to make basic pattern alterations, cut out, assemble and fit your garments. As well as this, you will be taught basic dressmaking techniques and make samples to practice your skills. There will be plenty of help with lockstitch and over lock sewing machines, if required. For the more advanced learner, you will be encouraged to make more complicated garments.

All people interested in dressmaking from beginners to the more experienced wanting to brush up their skills.

Learning Outcomes:

The learning outcomes are listed for a full year – 3 terms of tuition. The tutor will adjust the course around the learners enrolled.

By the end of the course (full academic year – 3 terms) you will have the opportunity to:

Beginners:
• know how to use a lockstitch and overlock sewing machines
• learn how to use a domestic dressmaking pattern
• understand the importance of a well fitted garment
• know how to assemble a garment in the correct order
• learn a variety of dressmaking skills e.g. inserting zips, different seam finishes, pockets, hems.

Intermediates:
• appreciate how to use a variety of fabrics e.g. stretch, velvet.
• learn a variety of dressmaking skills to produce a professional finish e.g. attaching collars, cuffs, pockets, button.
• make garments including more complicated skills and processes

Advanced:
• work on achieving a professional finish to your garments
• make more complicated garments e.g. coats, jackets.
• alter patterns
• use luxurious fabrics
• work more independently

In order to make a garment you will need to purchase fabric, a pattern and a sewing kit which includes: stitch scissors, dressmaking shears, steel pins, and tape measure. All of these will be discussed in the first session. Each student will also need at least one metre of fabric to make their samples, an old sheet or quilt cover is ideal.

Brief Description

This course will introduce you to beginners pattern cutting in women’s wear, using block pattern manipulation techniques. After learning initial techniques and skills you will produce a set of basic blocks, using your own measurements.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Previous dressmaking experience will be beneficial.

Learning Outcomes:

This course will be organised in the following way:
Term 1

• Draft a half scale skirt block using your own measurements
• Learn how to adapt the block to produce different styles
• Draft a skirt block using your own measurements
• Design and make a skirt

Term 2/3
• Draft a complete bodice block using your own measurements
• Learn how to adapt the block to produce different styles
• Design and make a blouse
Term 3 (last 5 weeks)
• Draft a trouser block using your own measurements

This dressmaking course is for beginners to help them learn the essentials and build confidence.

Learners will learn essential dressmaking skills, including: how to use and thread a sewing machine, how to use and follow a shop bought garment pattern, to then be able to construction a garment, and take measurements and choose the correct fabrics.

This dressmaking course is for complete beginners with no experience of using a sewing machine or making a garment. People with some experience who wish to improve are also welcome.

Brief Description:

A course centered around working with timber. You will be learning and practicing the following joints: Half Lap, Mortice and Tenon, Dove Tail, T Halving, Bridal and Dowel Joint. Once you are confident with the individual joints, you can extend your learning by producing a five joint frame using all the skills learned constructing the individual joints. These joints are used in every day joinery projects. Once you have mastered these you can go on to make individual projects.
You will be shown how to use the tools correctly and how to sharpen/maintain carpentry hand tools.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

This is a course for beginners. No previous experience is necessary.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course you will have the opportunity to:
• Identify and name common carpentry tools
• Know how to maintain carpentry tools
• Learn how to use them safely
• Produce woodwork joints

Are you looking for a daytime activity and interested in silver jewellery? Then this is the course for you! Throughout the course, you will develop skills in design, soldering, piercing with a jewellery saw, filing and polishing.

Your first project will be to design and make two silver rings.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Manual dexterity is an advantage but complete beginners all welcome

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

· Recognise and handle silversmithing tools safely.

· Practice metal forming, wire bending, soldering, and rub-over stone setting techniques.

· Develop skills in forming, annealing and pickling metal to shape a flat band ring.

· Prepare silver prior to soldering or polishing

· Experiment with methods for adding texture and different finishing techniques

· Apply techniques learned to make items of silver jewellery.

Improve your silver jewellery making skills and learn new traditional silver-smithing techniques!

During this course you will practise and hone your skills and widen your repertoire of traditional handmaking jewellery techniques, such as wax carving, granulation and reticulation. You will also refine your piercing skills and learn to solder pieces with multiple joints. Use the skills you’ve learned to work with gemstones and develop your own designs.

Please note: There will be no class on Thursday 17th October (due to a school event) and Thursday 31st October (half term).

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

You should ideally have completed a beginner’s course, and be competent in basic silver soldering, piercing, forming and shaping. Experience of basic bezel gemstone setting is an advantage but not essential.

• Practice and hone your skills in metal forming, wire bending, soldering, and rub-over stone setting techniques.
• To widen your repertoire of traditional handmaking jewellery techniques that can be used to design and make your own pieces, such as wax carving, granulation and reticulation.

Brief Description:

Recent events have taught us that sometimes we need to be able to express ourselves or occupy ourselves in new ways. Sometimes just for fun but sometimes to remain healthy. This course will offer learners the chance to challenge themselves, overcome obstacles through problem solving skills, find new means of expression (or develop existing ones). This can be done through the creation of artworks. In addition to this the record of a journey of development in the form of a journal can provide a useful and inspirational tool for personal expression and exploration of ideas. Combining these two closely connected practices will enable learners to develop confidence through step by step achievement of goals and milestones and improve their outlook by building a set of skills appropriate to them as individuals.

Brief Description

On our Dressmaking course you will be guided through the purchase of fabrics and patterns. You will learn how to make basic pattern alterations, cut out, assemble and fit your garments. As well as this, you will be taught basic dressmaking techniques and make samples to practice your skills. There will be plenty of help with lockstitch and overlock sewing machines, if required. For the more advanced learner, you will be encouraged to make more complicated garments.

In order to make a garment you will need to purchase fabric, a pattern and a sewing kit
which includes: stitch scissors, dressmaking shears, steel pins, and tape measure. All

If you are a complete beginner to Oil painting, or have some experience then this is the course for you. The course is designed for complete beginners to painting, and those who have some experience. The course will be based on the teaching of essential skills. These skills will be transferrable to any genre, style or medium in painting (we will concentrate on oil or acrylic) both traditional and contemporary. You will be able to progress at your own pace and will build confidence accordingly. In summary, this is a skills based course intended to equip you with essential skills for any genre or style.

This course will provide instruction and support on how to compose and paint in watercolours.

Do you have a favourite artist or painting you would like to copy? Or you can choose your own images to paint either from photographs, paintings by other artists or your own objects. The course will cover background information on different art movements, how to examine a painting and how to approach actually painting it.

Instruction will be given on starting a painting, mixing colours accurately and use of brushwork to get the effects you want, ending up with a painting in the style of your choice.

Course Aims

Learners will explore design and composition including the use of colour, values and masses to appreciate how and why choices were made by artists when creating works of art. This knowledge will be applied to a painting to develop this appreciation and confidence in the longer term.

Drawing Skills Brief Description:

Drawing skills can be done for pleasure, relaxation or with a more defined purpose. The course will explore what drawing is, what it can be for and why we do it. Come along to the East Asian Painting course if you want to explore, in a relaxed environment, a variety of Chinese and Japanese watercolour techniques, such as a study of Calligraphy and how its techniques are applied to painting. Group exhibitions are held every two years, visits to galleries organised for those interested.

Brief Description

Writing life stories is about capturing personal experiences in a way that can be understood and enjoyed by others. Everyone has a story to tell because every one of us has lived a life unique to us. Some people want to set down their journey through life to pass on to children or grandchildren whilst others may want to write an account of their family history. Perhaps you have a diary written by a relative or letters or recordings of the stories told down through the generations that you would like to pull together in a way that can give others a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to be that person. Writing life stories always starts with the desire to explore what the intensely personal experience of living might be like from someone else’s perspective and sharing in that perspective can enrich our own lives. 

Our recent personal and community experience of the COVID pandemic has led many of us to want to capture what we and others have been through in a way that means our memories of it can be revisited and never be forgotten. Memories that are shared remain relevant, teach us something about the past and present and, most importantly of all, are not lost as time moves on and the world changes around us. 

So if you want to share memories of a loved one or tell your story to others or spark new interest in the experiences of a family member from the past, a short course of Writing Life Stories will lead you through how to go about getting started. If you know the skills required and the various ways of tackling and presenting a life story project your enjoyment of writing one will be enhanced, and the finished result will be something others will want to read.

Creative Writing for Beginners

Brief Description: 

As the word of letter cutting implies, we will carve letters (or numbers) on stones.  In this beginner’s course, you will learn how to carve house numbers or paper weights using a piece of Welsh slate which is less challenging for a beginner than harder types of stone.   

During this course, you will be introduced to basic letter design and drawing which will be a base for good letter cutting.  The tutor will also show you some calligraphy which is also a source for letter design.  Without sound knowledge of lettering and the associated drawing skill, you can’t achieve a high level of letter cutting.   

Also handling and maintaining tools correctly are very important skills to achieve good hand cut lettering. You will use Tungsten Carbide head chisels and a dummy (a form of hammer), which will be provided.  The tutor will show you the correct technique to sharpen the chisels.  

As mentioned you will be using a piece of Welsh slate in this course but there will hopefully be some opportunities to cut various other stones which are native to the U.K. 

You will also get a brief history of letter cutting in the U.K. including Edward Johnston and Eric Gill. 

Please note: You will be handling stones, heavy and sharp tools so we highly recommend wearing  steel toe shoes or heavy duty shoes. 

Sandals or other casual shoes are not recommended.

Upcycle your furniture and bring new life to an old favourite with this Upholstery course! This is a practical course for both beginners and advanced learners. You will start with a ‘drop in’ seat, simple chair or stool and progress to more complex projects such as an armchair or headboard. This course will include both traditional and modern upholstery techniques.

Brief Description

Writing life stories is about capturing personal experiences in a way that can be understood and enjoyed by others. Everyone has a story to tell because every one of us has lived a life unique to us. Some people want to set down their journey through life to pass on to children or grandchildren whilst others may want to write an account of their family history. Perhaps you have a diary written by a relative or letters or recordings of the stories told down through the generations that you would like to pull together in a way that can give others a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to be that person. Writing life stories always starts with the desire to explore what the intensely personal experience of living might be like from someone else’s perspective and sharing in that perspective can enrich our own lives. 

Our recent personal and community experience of the COVID pandemic has led many of us to want to capture what we and others have been through in a way that means our memories of it can be revisited and never be forgotten. Memories that are shared remain relevant, teach us something about the past and present and, most importantly of all, are not lost as time moves on and the world changes around us. 

So if you want to share memories of a loved one or tell your story to others or spark new interest in the experiences of a family member from the past, a short course of Writing Life Stories will lead you through how to go about getting started. If you know the skills required and the various ways of tackling and presenting a life story project your enjoyment of writing one will be enhanced, and the finished result will be something others will want to read. 

This course may be funded by Cambridgeshire Skills, so full attendance is required; you will also need to complete an enrolment form so that the office can apply for the funding and complete an individual learning plan weekly with your tutor.

This course may be fully funded if:
You are over 19 years old
You live within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough combined authority
and have lived in the UK / an EEA country for the last 3 years.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A dressmaking twilight course that covers the core skills in garment construction including: introduction to the sewing machine, dressmaking terminology, learning how to take correct measurements and garment construction techniques.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to improve their dressmaking skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE (3 TERMS)

• Know how to use a sewing machine.
• Learn how to use dressmaking patterns.
• Understand the importance of a well fitted garment.
• Know how to assemble a garment in the correct order.
• How to sew seams, hems and closures, pockets, elasticated waistbands, etc.

INTERMEDIATES:

• Know how to sew using stretch fabric.

Brief Description

Upcycle your furniture and bring new life to an old favourite! This is a practical course for both beginners and advanced learners. You will start with a ‘drop in’ seat, simple chair or stool and progress to more complex projects such as an armchair or headboard. This course will include both traditional and modern upholstery techniques.

You will look at a different artist or sculptor each week, learn a bit more about their life and how their work developed during their career.

We will look at a different artist every week, from a variety of periods including, Joaquin Sorolla, Henri Matisse, Harmen Steenwyck, Mona Hatoum, Bridget Riley and more! Using vibrant images, video clips and a few quizzes along the way, it’s fun!

This course is fun, educational, and always inspiring!

Brief Description

On our Dressmaking course you will be guided through the purchase of fabrics and patterns. You will learn how to make basic pattern alterations, cut out, assemble and fit your garments. As well as this, you will be taught basic dressmaking techniques and make samples to practice your skills. There will be plenty of help with lockstitch and over lock sewing machines, if required. For the more advanced learner, you will be encouraged to make more complicated garments.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

All people interested in dressmaking from beginners to the more experienced wanting to brush up their skills.

Learning Outcomes:

The learning outcomes are listed for a full year – 3 terms of tuition. The tutor will adjust the course around the learners enrolled.

By the end of the course (full academic year – 3 terms) you will have the opportunity to:

Beginners:
• know how to use a lockstitch and overlock sewing machines
• learn how to use a domestic dressmaking pattern
• understand the importance of a well fitted garment
• know how to assemble a garment in the correct order
• learn a variety of dressmaking skills e.g. inserting zips, different seam finishes, pockets, hems.

Intermediates:
• appreciate how to use a variety of fabrics e.g. stretch, velvet.
• learn a variety of dressmaking skills to produce a professional finish e.g. attaching collars, cuffs, pockets, button.
• make garments including more complicated skills and processes

Advanced:
• work on achieving a professional finish to your garments
• make more complicated garments e.g. coats, jackets.
• alter patterns
• use luxurious fabrics
• work more independently

In order to make a garment you will need to purchase fabric, a pattern and a sewing kit which includes: stitch scissors, dressmaking shears, steel pins, and tape measure. All of these will be discussed in the first session. Each student will also need at least one metre of fabric to make their samples, an old sheet or quilt cover is ideal.

This dressmaking course is for complete beginners with no experience of using a sewing machine or making a garment. People with some experience who wish to improve are also welcome.

This Painting and Drawing course aims to enable you to acquire the painting and drawing skills and knowledge to express your own ideas and emotions and to analyse and enjoy the work of other artists. Topics covered will be: painting, drawing, tone, composition, colour and perspective.

None – all levels are welcome.

Brief Description:

Are you looking for a daytime activity and interested in silver jewellery? Then this is the course for you! Throughout the course, you will develop skills in design, soldering, piercing with a jewellery saw, filing and polishing.

Your first project will be to design and make two silver rings.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Manual dexterity is an advantage but complete beginners all welcome

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

· Recognise and handle silversmithing tools safely.

· Practice metal forming, wire bending, soldering, and rub-over stone setting techniques.

· Develop skills in forming, annealing and pickling metal to shape a flat band ring.

· Prepare silver prior to soldering or polishing

· Experiment with methods for adding texture and different finishing techniques

· Apply techniques learned to make items of silver jewellery.

Brief Description:

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to begin their journey to learn patchwork and quilting. The tutor aims to cover a variety of common techniques and the blocks can be repeated to make into anything from a large quilt, to a cushion or a bag. Ideal for anyone wanting to make a baby quilt. Others may wish to attend to perfect their skills and be guided to work on a personal project.

Previous Experience and Knowledge Needed?

Basic experience in using a sewing machine is essential such as being able to wind a bobbin, thread up the machine and sew in a straight line. Patchwork is much easier to access than dressmaking and is a great way to use even basic sewing skills to be creative.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the eight-week course, newcomers will have the opportunity to:

• learn all about fabric preparation and how to use the correct tools and equipment such as a rotary cutter and mat
• sew an accurate ¼” seam and learn why it’s important
• be guided to make traditional block and not so traditional blocks
• learn the basics of quilting and binding
• develop your design skills with colour and shapes

The centre has several sewing machines to use or you may prefer to bring your own. You will need your own plastic bobbins/spools as well as basic equipment such as fabric scissors and pins.

In time you will need to purchase your own rotary cutter, mat and ruler.

Patchwork weight fabric is required and places like Hobby Craft will have small packs of ‘fat quarters’ at a reasonable price.

Whilst not essential, more progress will be made if learners have access to a sewing machine at home.

For the first session you will need to bring:

Fabric scissors, a notebook, some fine pins and some cotton fabric such a pack of fat quarters. It’s a good idea to have a colour scheme in mind from the start. The tutor is keen that you resist spending a lot of money on special tools and equipment. This will come in time depending on your needs and pocket.
